Generous animal lovers have helped an appeal to refurbish Chesterfield animal centre hit a major milestone.

The town centre’s RSPCA branch is celebrating after the rebuild appeal topped the £100,000 mark – giving the charity an extra boost as plans are submitted for the first major phase of rebuilding work. Architectural drawings for the new facility have been put in for planning approval, focusing on the kennel and chattery blocks. The charity hopes work will begin in spring, pending local authority approval.

The total rebuilding scheme is estimated to cost in the region of £2 million. This updated figure takes into account latest developments in RSPCA licensing standards and will represent a major investment in animal welfare in the region.

Including the £100,000 raised so far from the rebuild appeal, the centre now has £1.2 million in hand to start the first phase of building work.

Branch manager Rachel Gray said: “This phenomenal total comprises funds from generous legacies, grants, fundraising events and kind donations from the public and we are so humbled by the out-pouring of support we have seen over the years.Pounds for pets

“Although we still have a way to go to get the £2 million mark, we feel confident that our supportive community will continue to stand behind us as we work hard to offer animals in need the best care possible.”

The organisation launched an appeal in June 2014 asking for support as the ageing facility was falling into a state of disrepair.

Caring for, rehabilitating and rehoming around 1000 animals each year makes them one of the busiest animal rescue centres in the region.

The decades of constant demand on the services has taken its toll on the building and the need for upgrades is now urgent so the major multi-phased building plan was devised.

The Derbyshire Times has also joined forces with the charity and launched a Pounds For Pets appeal to encourage their readers to support the project.

If you would like to support the rebuild, you can make a donation at www.chesterfield-rspca.org.uk, post a cheque made payable to RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch to 137 Spital Lane, Chesterfield, S41 0HL or visit the Chesterfield Animal Centre on Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00am- 4.00pm or call in at the branch’s charity shop outside the Market Hall in Chesterfield Town Centre.
