Our Mayoral Appeal may be called ‘Give a pet a home’, but what we are actually helping the RSPCA to do is raise money for a new home for all sorts of different animals that have been abandoned or mistreated.

Please help us to raise money for this worthy cause by coming to our events, buying a raffle ticket or even buying a Chester Field Mayor Bear. All profits will go straight to the Appeal fund.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Yours sincerely

Councillor Fred Quayle
Mayor of Chesterfield

The Mayor & Mayoress of Chesterfield

The RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Branch is an independent charity, which receives no financial assistance from RSPCA headquarters or the government. The entire centre’s running costs must be met by raising funds locally.

Their main aim is to take in unwanted and abandoned animals and find them loving, permanent homes. This is never easy as the high volume of unwanted animals often fare outweighs the suitable family homes needed.

A rudimentary animal centre was first built on the Spital Lane site in 1960. There have been many additions over the years but the animal centre is currently licensed to kennel 50 dogs, 24 cats and various other small animals, including rabbits, rodents, birds and livestock. As you can imagine tea times are very busy!

2008 is shaping up to be a very exciting year. Architects’ plans for a new centre have been drawn up and are at the approval stage. The new centre will be built in phases. Their aim is to start with the puppy house, hopefully as early as next year. A public appeal will be launched to raise money for each phase. You will be able to support the appeal by sponsoring a ‘virtual brick or kennel’ in the new buildings.

Hi, I’m Chester the Mayor of Chesterfield’s official appeal mascot. I always like to wear my full Civic Regalia as I think it looks very smart on me!

If you would like to have your own Mayor Bear, please contact Lin Debenham, Executive & Civic Secretary, Mayor’s Parlour, Town Hall Rose Hill, Chesterfield S40 1LP or by telephone on 01246 345239; email: lin.debenham@chesterfield.gov.uk

Mayor Bears are available at £8.99 each, plus postage (if required) of £1.70. Bears like me are also available from: the Tourist Information Centre, Chesterfield Museum, the Doll’s House Gallery on South Street, Stuart Bradley Jewellers, Burlington Street, and Bigwicks at the Market Hall, also available in the RSPCA Shop in the Market Hall and the RSPCA Centre at Spital Lane.

Each Mayor Bear is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Mayor, Councillor Fred Quayle. All profits go directly to the Mayor’s Appeal. The 100% recyclable packaging is sponsored by Inspirepac Ltd, Carrwood Road, Chesterfield Trading Estate, S41 9QB.
