A big thank you to everyone who supported the branch during pet adoption week 2008. We were out and about during the week promoting the animals in our care looking for loving home. We also collected 83.06 in donations. Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

Supporting the branch - local animals in need of your help...

RSPCA branches do not receive aid from headquarters, the government or lottery aid. Therefore your support is vital for animal welfare in your area...

The RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire branch takes in and re-homes around 1,000 abandoned, unwanted and mistreated animals each year.

How you can help the animal centre

Raising the necessary funds to operate the animal centre is a constant headache. We have a small number of very dedicated volunteers who man stalls at various events, do voluntary driving duties, donate time to the charity shop, help care for the animals at the centre and also do homevisiting. Without their generous support the animal centre could not operate properly and life would be very difficult.

These are just some of the ways you can help and make a real difference

Legacies & Bequests

A legacy or bequest to your local RSPCA can provide crucial funds. We could not carry out our work without such generous support. But please remember all RSPCA branches are separately registered charities, so if you want your gift to help animals near you, you must ask your solicitor to make it clear in your will. Ask your solicitor to quote our branch name and registered charity number so your gift will go directly to your local RSPCA branch.

Making a donation

As a charity we have to rely on the practical, long-term generosity of people like you to help us care for the hundreds of animals that are brought to us each year.

If you would like to make a monetary donation to the RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire branch, please send cheques or postal orders made payable to the RSPCA Chesterfield Branch to the animal centre or simply call in.

We also are very grateful for donations of bric-a-brac, clothing and toys. Bric-a-brac and clothing can be taken to either our charity shop in the Chesterfield Market Hall or the animal centre.

The animal centre is always in need of donations of pet food, treats, toys, collars, leads, towels, blankets and sheets for bedding.

Below are other ways of donating to the animal centre you may not have thought of:

  • Payroll giving

Just £1.50 taken automatically out of your wages each week can make all the difference, that's just 21p a day!

  • Committed giving

Just £5 taken out of your bank account each month will guarantee our centre a regular income and that's as little as 16p a day. If you want to help the animals then please contact the animal centre for a committed giving form

  • Self assessment tax

Donating to charity through your self assessment tax return will be as simple as entering a unique number on your return. Individuals will be able to nominate a charity to receive their tax repayment as a donation.

The Chesterfield and North Derbyshire branch of the RSPCA has already registered with the inland revenue to be able to receive donations this way.

LAA93HG is the unique code number you will need to quote on your self assessment tax return for your donation to benefit the needy animals in the care of the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire branch of the RSPCA.

Volunteering & Fundraising

We rely on volunteers to carry out a variety of duties to help the running of the animal centre, from fundraising to dog walking, volunteers play a vital role at the animal centre and are absolutely vital for the branch to remain open and for our work to continue. Your skills and abilities could make a real difference to the animals in our care.

If you have a bit of time to spare and are interested in helping, please download a volunteer application form and a skills audit form. Once both these forms have been completed they are to be sent to the animal centre for your application to be processed. If you are unable to download and print these forms please call 01246 273358 or info@chesterfield-rspca.org.uk

  • Kennel assistant volunteer

Helping staff take care of all the animals in the animal centre, from dogs to cats, rabbits to horses. Handling, exercising, grooming and feeding the animals can be very enjoyable and is a very important part of running the animal centre. Don't worry we give full training, including a health and safety induction.

Pictured is Danny Taylor who is one of our long standing volunteers who helps out at the animal centre and also does home checking.

Danny is 33 years old and lives in Swanwick, Derbyshire. He said: 'The volunteering experience has been a positive one for me and my aspirations for the future are to try and obtain an NVQ level two in animal care, expand my skills and knowledge and to carry on supporting the staff in a very worthwhile cause.'

  • Fundraising volunteer

This is a vital part of volunteering for an animal centre because without fundraising the branch would not survive. As you probably know we do not receive any financial assistance from RSPCA headquarters and we are totally self -funding. One day's running costs are approximated to be an amazing £750.

Helping at events, holding a stall or shaking a tin on collection days, putting up posters in your area and representing us at your local church or school fete is just a small selection of things you can do to raise money. Organising events and creating new ideas are always needed and appreciated.

You could even dress up as a fluffy bunny and help out on one of our flag days (in the line of duty, of course!)

We are currently seeking fundraising volunteers to help out at events such as fayres, flag days and shows. The importance of fundraising could never be greater as the animal centre is on the verge of launching a re-build appeal to help raise funds for new animal accommodation.

The animal centre will be under going major redevelopments to ensure it is complying with current animal welfare legislation. If you feel you can help with the re-build appeal by raising funds or helping at fundraising events please contact the animal centre on 01246 273358 or e mail your name, address and a contact telephone number to info@chesterfield-rspca.org.uk

  • Home checker

Home checkers play a vital role at the animal centre and without their outstanding commitment to the cause we could not find good homes for all the animals we take in.

Every animal that is adopted must have a home visit so we can make sure that the animal is going into a suitable home environment. All home checkers are volunteers and we rely on their flexability and hard work to carry out the home visits when an animal is reserved.

Home checkers also do post adoption visits to make sure the animal is settling into his/her new home. Happy pets in happy homes is what we aim for and home checking plays a very important part in this process.

  • Charity shop volunteer

The RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire branch has two charity shops in the Chesterfield Market Hall situated in the town centre.

We are always looking for volunteers to help run the charity shops. There is always plenty to do in an RSPCA charity shop with roles to suit everybody, such as sorting clothes, helping customers, operating the till or for those with an eye for design, arranging the shop window display.

You do not need any special skills and volunteering in our charity shops will enable you to meet lots of different people, be a valued member of a team and learn new skills.

  • Driving, gardening & maintenance volunteer

At the RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire branch we need volunteers to carry out driving duties which can involve taking our animals to local veterinary surgeries or emptying our food bins at supermarkets.

We also need help with gardening and general maintenance tasks.

Weekly, monthly or periodically, as much time as you can spare is always appreciated and can make a big difference to the running of our busy animal centre.

If you feel that this kind of volunteering is for you please contact the animal centre today.

  • Trusteeship

The RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire branch is run by a committee of trustees who are elected each year by the members of the branch at our AGM.

Becoming a trustee of any RSPCA branch is a worthwhile and important role and really provides an opportunity to influence how the RSPCA branch cares for and prevents cruelty to animals.

Most committees meet monthly and the work is shared between the branch officers (the chair, treasurer and secretary) and other committee members.
